Tokyo Weather and Climate Conditions
By Da Jo

Tokyo weather - plan your Tokyo trip in advance according to the weather forecast. Tokyo weather can be extreme.

September is the typhoon season. Few of them are strong, usually it ends with some hard-hitting winds. If you are visiting Tokyo at this time of the year, I recommend paying attention to the weather forecast. Tokyo public transportation timetables can be affected too.

Yearly Weather In Tokyo Forecast - Tokyo Seasons

Summer (June-August) - begins in June with the rainy season, which lasts between three weeks to one month.
Although it doesn't rain every day, rain can be heavy. When the rainy season ends, weather in Tokyo becomes extremely hot and sticky. This is certainly not the best time for a Tokyo vacation.

One of the interesting Tokyo facts - since Tokyo is so crowded, the population contributes a few degrees to the climate. Concrete asphalt and continuously working air-condition systems produce artificial heat 24 hours a day. Mosquitoes are an issue during the wet season, generally in parks and gardens. You rarely find them in the urban areas in central Tokyo.

Autumn (September-November) is my personal favorite Tokyo weather. In October pleasant temperatures and a clear sky are the typical weather forecast. Tokyo night temperatures drop significantly. Fall foliage in Tokyo is at its best during November. It is absolutely one of the biggest Tokyo attractions. Magnificent fall colors paint the Japanese gardens with a stunning blend of red and yellow.

Winter (December-February) - temperatures are around 5 - 10 degrees Celsius/ 40 - 50 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperatures require packing winter clothes suitable for this climate (see my ultimate packing list for Tokyo ). Be warned - Tokyo winter is so dry... and gives your skin a very hard time. Snowfall is Tokyo is infrequent, but does occur. It also affects the public transportation.

Spring (March-May) - the most glorious time to visit Tokyo. That's when Japan's famous tree blossom starts, beginning with plum trees in March and continuing to April with cherry blossoms. Weather forecasts include reports on the advance of the Sakura Zensen (cherry blossom front). The Meteorological Agency and the media follow "cherry blossom front" as it slowly moves northward. To celebrate, Japanese arrange picnics in parks and temples. The temperatures are pleasant, though spring rains are likely to happen.

Written by a westerner-turned-Japanese. If this is the first time you're going to this magical destination, Tokyo tends to create somewhat of a culture shock. Japan is like no other country you have ever experienced. You're likely to be surprised.
